It has been some time since I did a Featured Artist post and this early morning I figured that it’s about time for a new one. This person is a multi-faceted artist who blew me away when I saw her work while browsing on Etsy. Her name is Laura Wilson from Laura Wilson Gallery of Peconic, NY.
Laura designs and produces magnetic earrings (on which she has spent 30 years refining to make them the most comfortable earrings in the world), brooches and eyeglass holders. She creates original acrylic paintings on canvas and slate. and one-of-a-kind sculptures made of polymer clay which are covered by a glass dome.
What initially caught my eye is this breathtaking Hand Painted Moonrise Gold Batik Fabric Statement Necklace. A beautiful hand painted necklace made of gold batik fabric and silver colored chain. Created in blues, turquoise, greens and purples with golden accents. 22 inch long chain with a toggle clasp (not shown). Each piece is made with Laura’s unique proprietary process and hand painted individually. It is extremely lightweight and hand washable. A matching pair of pierced earrings with surgical steel french hooks complete this one of a kind set.
In her own words…
“I love to create beautiful things. I’ve been a jewelry designer since 1974. I’ve been sculptor for the last 10 years, and I’ve been painting on canvas for 4 years. I attended hundreds of fine art and craft shows across the USA before I retired from them in 2010.
When I started making jewelry back in 1974 I was the typical starving artist. I used to do a lot of saw (pierced) work and ended up with lots of little scrap pieces. I started recycling them by melting (fusing) them together at around 1600 degrees and creating a completely new style of jewelry. I love torch work, because in the fusion process, you end up with unique textures and shapes that you may not expect, so it’s always an adventure.”
